Nandhan 2024 Tamil Movie Critique
Plus Points (+)
It is true that Tamil cinema is completely filled with action, thriller, and comedy movies nowadays. Audiences want something new and unique, not just a cliched old school script like villains kidnapped heroines and heroes defeated villains and more.
If you agree with me, that means you have a good taste in movies, and you can try the Nandhan film. Because this film is made with a minimum budget, but its story and character's acting are next level.
The first half is a combination of thriller and drama, where Balaji Sakthivel shines in the negative role of Kopulingam. His acting, dialogue delivery, and greed for power make him a powerful villain who has a weapon of sweat language to create illusions surrounding himself, so no one can complain against him in the PCR Act.
While the second half is not as engaging as the first one, still some scenes uplift movies in the second half, like how Koozhpaanai takes revenge on his brother and more .
After celebrating the success of Garudan (2024), Sasikumar Mahalingam, aka M. Sasikumar, appears in the lead cast in this film, where he plays the role of Koozhpaanai, an innocent servant who always defends his owner under any extreme conditions. Some scenes in this film blow your mind, like when his brother Nandhan is dead, Koozhpaanai still serves his boss’ father, who is an invalid with an acerbic and casteist tongue.
The first half of M. Sasikumar's performance is decent, as all characters in the film make no difference. But in the second half, when he destroys the Kopulingam rule in his village and how he takes revenge on his brother, it is watchable.
While the other side Balaji Sakthivel's performance as Koppulingam is outstanding in the whole film as a villain, he is an expert in hiding his bad intentions into a sweaty layer of language.
Minus Points (-)
The first half is fast-paced and well organized, but after the interval makers mixed everything, which tested the patience level of the audience.
Makers forget that nowadays audience becomes smart, because first half makers glorify Koppulingam characters on screen, but in second half it looks like they intentionally decrease the powers of Balaji Sakthivel characters.
Sruthi Periyasamy is a very talented actress. Now in this film, she plays the role of M. Sasikumar's wife. Her dialogue delivery and supporting her husband grab audience attention. She has potential, but makers don't give her more space on screen.
Technical Aspects
After receiving mixed reviews from Udanpirappe (2021), director and writer Era Saravanan suddenly disappeared from the Tamil film industry; now he once again comes back with Nandhan.
No doubt Era Saravanan is a very talented director and writer. In his direction, there are many flaws in the Nandhan film. If he increases pace in the second half instead of glorifying some romantic scenes, which is better for film.
Ghibran's music gets a positive response from the public, but his background music adds 5 stars in the film, while on the other side, Saran R. Cinematographer skills are next-level special in the first half Nelson Anthony's editing skills get 70 marks.
