Plus Points (+)

Director Pa. Ranjith, who is popular for making social drama movies that are based on cast discrimination, women's empowerment, injustices, and more, Now he has again come back with suspense, a thriller, and a drama movie that gives lessons like don't be greedy and selfish.

First half is a mixture of drama, suspense, and thriller, where movie revolves around a tribal group and its chief Thangalaan, how they became the salaves of zamindars, and the hidden secrets of Kolar Gold Fields, which create suspense in the audience's mind and force them to sit for a long time in the cinema hall. But the second half is a little bit disappointing and irritating for audience which has a lot of hopes to the actors Vikram and Malavika Mohanan.

Movie story is unique and not predictable, which is the biggest plus point of this movie, but due to the slow pace and poor VFX mostly in the second half, the film fails to grab the audience's attention. But Vikram and Daniel Caltagirone's portrayal grabs the movie again on track.

As we know, music is the backbone of every movie. Without music, movie looks like a moon without its light. Back to topic, G. V. Prakash Kumar, aka G. V. Prakash, who is popular for Rebel, Kalvan, Dear, and more Tamil and Telugu movies, now appears in Thangalaan as an music composer. where his music is decent, but his background scores get full marks for creating suspense and thriller in audiences minds through his music.

Thangalaan's center spots are Vikram and Malavika Mohanan. Where Vikram's performance attracts a lot  of audiences towards theaters, while other Malavika Mohanan character hold them for a long time. If we discuss cast performance after getting back to back success in historical drama movies like Ponniyin Selvan: I and Ponniyin Selvan: II, now Tamil Super Star Vikram now appears in the lead role in Thangalaan, where he plays the role of Thangalaan, a leader of a tribal group who lives in Veppur village.

First half of Vikram's performance is outstanding, and beyong my mind I literally hats off his acting in the cinema hall, where his different speaking Tamil language is a little bit irritating. Because I can't understand what is said, but his facial expressions and body language give me a little bit of insight into what's on his mind.

Malavika Mohanan as Aarathi shines with her dark horse performance, which adds suspense to the film. First half of the movie revolves around her. While the other side popular through Out of Syllabus (2006) and Milana (2007), Parvathy Thiruvothu Kottuvattaa appears in Thangalaan as a lead actress and plays the role of Thangalaan's wife, where her romantic score and dialogue delivery get full marks.

Minus Points (-)

Director Pa. Ranjith comes with a great historic drama movie, but due to the majority of time using a different language, which is similar to Tamil but not Tamil, it feels like you're watching Aadujeevitham: The Goat Life Malayalam movie, where the first 20 minutes are in Tamil and the latter whole movie is in Arabic language.
Poor VFX and slow pace make the movie a little bit tedious, especially in the second half, and some weird language dialogue takes patience test, while Telugu dubbing is not as good as intended.

Technical Aspects

Pa. Ranjith's Thangalaan gets mixed reviews from audiences, where the majority are positive. Because of the lead cast and G. V. Prakash background music, Pa. Ranjith should focus more on the second half instead of adding some thriller scenes, which is better for the movie.

A. Kishor Kumar shines in the second half with his cinematography skills, where he captured Malavika Mohanan's anger expression, which is beautiful and more natural things like deserts, forests, and mountains, and when his camera moves to the side of Kolar Gold Fields, which gives a brief recall of Rocky Bhai's entry in kgf 2.
Editing of Selva R. K. is decent, where the background color is perfectly arranged, but the VFX team did not get passing marks.

Overall, Thangalaan is a historic drama movie that gives lessons like greed makes you blind. Where first half is a mixture of drama and suspense, while the second half is a little bit irritating and a combination of action, thriller, and drama.
