Boat 2024 Tamil Movie: Critique

Plus Points (+)

After giving blockbuster movies like Puli and Oru Kanniyum Moonu Kalavaanikalum, director Chimbu Devan disappeared from the Tamil film industry after giving back-to-back webseries and TV series like Kasada Tabara and Victim. Now he once again comes back with our favorite comedy super star, Yogi Babu.

The first 35 minutes of the movie run in a normal way, like people from Madras and outside of Madras, like Rajasthan and neighboring states, come to the beach to enjoy their holidays. But a twist comes in the movie when a rumor spreads that the Japanese Air Force is going to bomb a camp near the beach. In this scene, Ghibran background music creates an urgency.

Just like Life of Pi, the second half of the Boat movie completely revolves around boats and how they survive boat sinkings and sharks who come fast from their sides. To create suspense in audience minds, makers add suspense to a movie, like a people's who is available on a boat including a dangerous terrorist. Now, how they identify him is noticeable.

One of the beauties of this movie is that the director mostly focuses on the available people on the boat who belong to different states and religions, like Hindu, Muslim, and Christian. Through these scenes, makers give a social message like religion equality. It means forget your religion debate, make a team, and think about how to deal with this situation now instead of dividing into religion.

We always see Yogi Babu as a supporting actor in many movies, including Bollywood and Telugu. But in this boat movie, he is a lead actor and plays the role of Kumaran as a boatman. In the first half, his performance is above average, but things get worse in the second half when the boat reaches the center of the sea. It means you're watching a movie with no action, comedy, only drama, and a little bit of suspense.

Gouri G. Kishan, who is famous for the Little Miss Rawther and Adiyae performances, is noticable. Here she has nothing to do much, but still she did her best. On the other side, M.S. Bhaskar and other supporting castes did what was needed.

Minus points (-)

The first half is more interesting than the second half because the first one is a mixture of suspense, thriller, action, and comedy, whereas the second half is only drama and a little bit of suspense.

POV:  Yogi Babu is a comedian. I think being the lead actor in this movie, Yogi Babu, is a wrong choice. If the makers cast Vijay Antony or Vikram Prabhu as the main cast, that is a better for this film.

Technical Aspects

As a director, Chimbu Devan did a good job in the first half of the movie, where he did all the things that the public demanded, like best dialogue, religion equality, hiring the best editor, and cinematography, but problems came in the lead cast.

Ghibran songs did not perform well, but his background music added a taste of suspense and thriller, while on the on the other side, as a cinematographer, Madhesh Manickam did awesome where he captured the blue sea, natural beauty, and small to small details of actors like their expression and editing done by Dinesh Ponraj.
