Rail 2024 Tamil Movie: Critique

Plus Points (+)

Tamil cinema is filled with action movies, but these often fail to connect with audiences, who see them as purely fictional. However, director Bhaskar Sakthi presents a unique story where drama, friendship, and honesty are the leading emotions, spreading a message of hope and redemption.

Director Bhaskar Sakthi, known for "Azhagarsamiyin Kudhirai" and "Pandiya Naadu," now brings the struggle story of a native villager facing direct job competition from outside migrants who possess twice the talent of local villagers.

The first half is interesting for those who enjoy drama movies with a deep social message. If you have patience, this movie is for you. Today's Gen Z prefers action, thriller, and superhero movies, but "Rail" is the opposite of what they want. The first half revolves around Muthaiah's struggle with job competition, where cinematographer Theni Eswar adds a touch of nature, capturing the village's natural scenes. Sometimes it feels like you're watching the "Panchayat" web series.

The second half resembles a drama movie where motivation and hard work are the lead emotions. Director Bhaskar Sakthi conveys a social message: don't hate migrants; if a person works hard enough, they can change their destiny.

Through "Rail," the filmmakers show the dark reality of our country, where local villagers hate or threaten migrants to leave because they believe companies hire migrants more than locals.

Kungumaraj Muthusamy, new to the Tamil film industry, plays the role of Muthaiah. His performance is decent in the first half, but he shines with natural acting in the second half, exemplifying that one can achieve anything with hope and patience.

Ramesh Vaidya, as Varadhan, becomes the center of attention and is a perfect example of a true friend who supports his friend in tough times and gives hope. Vairamala, as Chellama, plays Muthaiah's wife, who initially hates her husband but later becomes his best friend and well-wisher.

Minus Points (-)

The first half feels a bit tedious, with extreme drama and emotional scenes that might irritate the audience. Additionally, some poorly written comedy jokes feel artificial.

Director Bhaskar Sakthi delivers a social message through this movie, but due to several ups and downs, the audience focuses more on what happens next rather than the hidden message.

Technical Aspects

Director Bhaskar Sakthi, popular before 2014, was known for making one movie per year. Now, after a long hiatus, he returns with another social drama, engaging the audience with funny jokes and delivering a message of hope and redemption. He casts mostly unknown actors, whose natural acting grabs the audience's attention.

The music score by S. J. Jananiy is decent, while cinematography by Theni Eswar uplifts the movie in several scenes, capturing the beauty of the village with high-definition cameras. Editing by Nagooran Ramachandran deserves full marks.
