Maharaja 2024 Tamil Movie: Critique

Plus Points (+)

After a long time, a movie has come to theaters that you can watch with your friends and family. The year 2024 has not been very lucky for Tamil movies, with the majority failing to entertain audiences.

After playing a negative role in the Bollywood movie Jawan, Vijay Sethupathi returns with another suspenseful drama where he stars alongside Anurag Kashyap and Natty.

The first half is slow-paced and dramatic, running in an interesting manner with Vijay Sethupathi’s comedy at the police station, Natty's aggressive parts, and Anurag Kashyap happily spending time with his family. Initially, it seems that Director Nithilan Swaminathan is intentionally adding these scenes to increase the movie's length. However, in the second half, you realize that certain inconspicuous moments from the first half actually hold the key to crucial developments.

The second half is more interesting for those who love violence, suspense, and thriller elements. Many scenes in the second half are not for the faint-hearted. By the end, you realize that the story is an intense revenge drama, not a light-hearted story about a missing dustbin.

I appreciate the hard work of the filmmakers, who spent 99% of their time creating an unpredictable script. Even by the end of the first half, you cannot predict what will happen next.

Director Nithilan Swaminathan's vision for this movie is clear: he aims to create a film filled with violence, suspense, and thriller elements. Director Nithilan Swaminathan’s strengths are evident in action and thriller movies like Ombatthane Dikku , Kurangu Bommai , and Ombathane Adbutha .

Director Nithilan Swaminathan may not be as popular in the Tamil film industry as SS Rajamouli and Lokesh Kanagaraj, but he often works on mid-budget movies that perform well at the box office without any superheroes. This is the first time he has worked with a popular star like Vijay Sethupathi.

The biggest strength of Maharaja is its strong action scenes, especially in the second half. Some action scenes are mind-blowing and fascinating to watch, though some scenes are very disturbing for audiences under 18, such as when Vijay Sethupathi kills goons with cut-throat razors. Ajaneesh Loknath’s background score balances the emotional and powerful sequences perfectly.

Maharaja lacks a dedicated comedian like Yogi Babu and Motta Rajendran, but Vijay Sethupathi’s comedy skills impress in the police station scene during the first half.

Vijay Sethupathi, one of the most popular actors in both South and North India, plays the role of Maharaja, a barber. In the first half, his performance is decent, with his dialogues representing his character well. In the second half, he transforms into a character similar to Ranvijay Singh in Animal , willing to go to any lengths to take revenge. Ajaneesh Loknath’s background music enhances the sense of violence and revenge. Anurag Kashyap as Selvam, Manikandan as Dhana, and Natty as Inspector Varadan deliver outstanding performances.

Minus Points (-)

The movie's script is wonderful and unique, but the makers have made it overly complex and confusing. The majority of the audience may be unsure if the sequence being shown is happening in the present or is a development from the past.

The pace can be tedious for fans who love action because the first hour focuses on drama and suspense, with only a few action and comedy scenes.

If your memory is sharp, Maharaja is the movie for you. To fully understand the second half, you need to remember every small character and event from the first half.

Technical Aspects

Director Nithilan Swaminathan brings unique ideas, with the second half being more interesting than the first. Anal Arasu’s cinematography deserves full marks for capturing realistic action and violence scenes, while Philomin Raj’s editing is decent.

Conclusion

Maharaja is a revenge drama film. The first half is decent, with drama and suspense taking the front seat, while the second half is a mix of action, violence, and revenge.
