Star 2024 Tamil Movie : Critique

Plus Points (+)

2024 is not so lucky for Tamil films. There are very few films released in the past that have had an impact on the audience's mind. Now, we talk about Star, which grabs the audience's attention through its solid storyline and romantic scenes between the lead cast.

When I watched Star movie , I suddenly remembered Varshangalkku Sesham , a Malayalam film released recently, which tells the story of two friends. One wants to become a film director, while the other wants to become a singer. Both face many obstacles in their path.

Back to the topic, after the success of Lift and  Dada , Kavin comes with another romantic drama movie where he stars alongside Preity Mukhundhan and Aaditi Pohankar in the lead roles, while Lal, Aaditi Pohankar, and Geetha Kailasam appear in supporting roles.

The first half is briskly paced and revolves around Kavin's antics in school and his romantic life in college, where comedy, romance, and drama lead the movie. On the other hand, the second half is disappointing for those looking for motivation in the film. To make the movie more interesting for the audience, director Elan adds some romantic scenes between Kavin and Surabhi and emotional scenes of Kalai where he is depressed in his life. This is good for increasing the length of the movie but fails to grab the audience's attention. If I were to conclude the whole film in two lines, it would be: The first half is more interesting compared to the second one.

Music is the best tool for adding life to a movie. Today, I give you the example of a Bollywood movie that did well at the box office due to its music. The film is Aashiqui 2 , released in 2014. The movie's story is average, but it gained popularity very quickly due to its solid music and broke all box office records of that time.

Back to the topic, this is the same case with  Star , where the audience likes its music. Yuvan Shankar Raja plays an important role. Sometimes his songs and background music elevate the film in many places.

Director Elan is not a very popular director in the Tamil film industry, but his movies still entertain the audience with their romantic stories, action, and solid dialogues. He is known for Pyaar Prema Kaadhal , Graghanam , and more.

Elan did very well in the first half, where he focused on Kavin, a six-year-old who wants to become a film actor, so he leaves his hometown Chennai and moves to Mumbai (the Film City of India). Here, I appreciate Ezhil Arasu K.'s cinematography skills, where he captures all types of human emotions like crying, struggling, happiness, and romance. He shows the reality of a middle-class person who tries to become an actor and sacrifices his happiness, tolerating family and society pressure.

Back to the cast performance, Kavin Raj, commonly known as Kavin, is famous for making movies in multiple genres. Now, after the success of Dada , he comes with a romance and drama movie where he plays the lead role of Kalai, a middle-class person who moves from Chennai to Mumbai to pursue his dream.

In the first half, his performance is awesome and decent. He appears in some romantic scenes with Preity Mukhundhan and Aaditi Pohankar. In the second half, his performance is a little faded due to bad writing, but the audience appreciates Yuvan Shankar Raja's solid background music.

On the other hand, Pandian as Lal wins the audience's heart through his supporting dialogues. He plays a father who motivates his son in hard times. Preity Mukundhan, who played Meera Malarkodi, has a great screen presence, and her chemistry with Kavin is laudable. The other supporting cast did what was needed.

Minus Points (-)

The movie's story is a great mixture of romance, drama, and thriller, but the problem with the screenplay is that it sometimes feels rushed, and it jumps from one emotional scene to another without giving the audience time to process it.

The first half is more satisfying and interesting for most of the audience due to the comedy and romantic scenes of Kavin in his school and college life. However, some scenes in the second half, where Kalai goes to an acting school in Mumbai, add much-needed gravitas to his struggle.

The second half is more complex and confusing for the majority of the audience due to the abrupt ending, leaving several questions unanswered, which adds to the confusion and disappointment.

Tecnical Aspects

Director Elan is new in the film industry. First, he cast Harish Kalyan for the lead role but later changed his mind and cast Kavin. The movie's story is unique and interesting, but the sudden jumps from emotional scenes to comedy scenes are a negative point of this film.

Yuvan Shankar Raja's music plays an important role in adding a taste of romance and emotional drama. On the other hand, Ezhil Arasu K.'s cinematography is decent, capturing fun, romance, drama, action, and some funny moments.

Conclusion

The movie's story is amazing, and the cast's performance is decent, but sometimes the screenplay feels rushed, mixing emotions in the second half.
