Rasavathi 2024 Tamil Movie : Critique

Plus Points (+)

After receiving positive responses from Mounaguru and Magamuni films, Director Santhakumar comes with another action thriller movie ( Rasavathi ), where he casts Arjun Das, Tanya Ravichandran, and Sujith Shankar in lead roles. On the other side, Reshma Venkatesh, Rishikanth, G. M. Sundar appear in supporting roles.

Arjun Das, who mainly appears in big-budget action, thriller, and crime movies in supporting roles like Master and Vikram , now appears in Rasavathi in a lead role.

The first half is similar to Director Santhakumar's style—slow-paced and detailed, creating suspense by not revealing another past incident between Sadhashiva Pandian and Parasu Raj. The second half is a mixture of action, thriller, and romantic scenes between the lead cast, with all the dots nicely connected. S. Thaman's background music plays an important role.

Comedy is an important part of every movie, following action and romance. G. M. Sundar's comedy is decent in the first half, where he appears on screen most of the time. However, in the second half, when action and suspense lead the movie, G. M. Sundar has less to do but still appears on screen as a supporting cast member rather than a comedian.

Many audiences think that G. M. Sundar is an old-school comedian with limited roles in today's era, but that's not true. While he was popular in the 90s and 2000s, nowadays, he is busy producing his own films.

Music is the soul of every movie, and S. Thaman's performance as a music composer in Rasavathi is decent. His romantic and thriller background music is awesome and fantastic.

I appreciate Director Santhakumar for adding scenes that spread awareness about environmental cleaning, such as when Arjun Das is seen cleaning empty liquor bottles strewn around a tourist spot in Kodaikanal by tourists from Kerala.

After solid performances in Aneethi and Butta Bomma, Arjun Das now appears in Rasavathi, playing the role of Sadhashiva Pandian, a Siddha doctor who lives in Kodaikanal. In the first half, his performance is decent in terms of action and drama, given his usual roles in crime and thriller movies. However, his performance as a romantic hero fails to attract audience attention.

On the other side, Tanya Ravichandran, the lead actress playing Surya, the Manager of a resort, delivers an average performance in the first half. She portrays a rebel-hearted girl who never trusts anyone due to her troublesome past. Some romantic scenes are good but fail to attract the audience.

Sujith Shankar appears in a negative role, delivering an awesome performance as a police inspector with a troublesome childhood. While his appearance in the first half is limited, he leads the second half where action, thriller, and suspense dominate.

Reshma Venkatesh as Chandra steals the show with her solid performance, appearing in the second half for a limited period. The romantic scenes between Chandra and Sadhashiva Pandian also work like magic.

Minus Points (-)

The first half is very slow and detailed, a concept that worked in 90's and 2000's movies but may not resonate with today's smart and intelligent audiences who prefer faster pacing. Removing some unnecessary scenes from the second half and increasing the speed in the first half would benefit the movie.

Arjun Das, known as an action hero who mainly plays negative roles in Tamil and Telugu movies, delivers an awesome performance compared to Rasavathi.

Some romantic scenes between Reshma Venkatesh and Arjun Das do not work as intended, and the romantic track between the lead cast, including Arjun Das and Tanya Ravichandran, feels artificial without emotions and feelings.

Technical Aspects

Firstly, I appreciate the hard work of Director Santhakumar and his team in creating a movie with action, drama, and romance. Improving the romantic track between Tanya Ravichandran and Arjun Das in the second half would enhance the movie's appeal. S. Thaman's music adds a good taste of romance.

Cinematography by Saravanan Elavarasu and Shiva G.R.N captures all human emotions deeply, including action, comedy, drama, and fighting. Editing is done by V.J. Sabu Joseph.

Conclusion

If you have the time and patience for a good, meaningful story, then Rasavathi is definitely for you. The first half's slow pace and mixture of drama and romance transition into a second half led by acting and suspense.
