Manjummel Boys 2024 Telugu Movie : Critique

Plus Points (+)

After breaking all box office records in the Malayalam language, "Manjummel Boys" has now hit the silver screen in Telugu. First, I appreciate the hard work of Director Chidambaram and his team for making a movie based on a real story.

The first half of the movie is a combination of comedy and drama, where we see a group of friends going on vacation in Kodaikanal. The second half is a mixture of survival, thriller, and drama, where Sushin Shyam’s background music plays an important role in creating suspense in the audience's mind.

The climax comes when they decide to visit Guna Caves, famous for being featured in Kamal Haasan's blockbuster film "Gunaa," released in 1991.

A movie without suspense is like a brand-new Audi car without an engine. The second half is completely filled with suspense and thriller, which keeps the audience glued to the screen until the end.

The first half of the movie runs slow, but when Subhash falls into the pit, the film picks up momentum. Soubin Shahir, the lead actor who plays Kuttan, delivers an awesome performance. His acting is good in the first half, but he steals the show in the second half.

Sreenath Bhasi, as Subhash, becomes the center of attraction in the second half when he falls into the pit. Sreenath Bhasi wins the audience's heart with his natural acting and emotional dialogue delivery.

Other supporting cast members, like George Maryan as Arumugam, a local seller; Lal Jr. as Siju; Mejo; Ramachandran Durairaj as Dominic, a local guide; Vijay Muthu as Sub-Inspector; and Karthika Vellathery as Bride Mani, the Forest Range Officer, also did well.

Minus points (-)

The biggest minus point of the "Manjummel Boys" film is its slow pacing. During the first 40 minutes, not much happens, and due to the lack of comedy and action in the first half, the movie easily becomes monotonous. However, the film picks up in the second half, where the thriller and suspense lead the whole movie.

Since the film is based on a real story, viewers already know what happens next. This is common in movies based on real events. The film has a simple story, and hence, it isn’t a big deal to guess what happens at the end. The predictability factor slightly affects the experience.

Technical Aspects

Chidambaram S. Poduval, aka Chidambaram, is new to the Malayalam film industry. He worked on the movie "Jan.E.Man," which was released in 2021, but his "Manjummel Boys" movie broke all box office records in the Malayalam film industry. Filmmaker Chidambaram beautifully portrays the essence of friendship, bonding, and resilience in the second half of the movie. On the other hand, the cinematography by Shyju Khalid is truly remarkable. He uses wide-angle shots of Kodaikanal and low-angle shots for Sreenath Bhasi as Subhash when he falls into the dark pit inside Guna Caves.

Sushin Shyam’s music is decent, and the editing by Vivek Harshan, which uses a combination of light black and white backgrounds, is well done. The Guna Caves scenes are wonderful.

Conclusion

"Manjummel Boys" is based on a true story where, during a visit to Guna Caves, one of the friends falls into a deep pit. The movie portrays how his friends help him to come out of the deep pit. Overall, the movie is a mixture of survival, drama, and thriller.
