Plus Points (+)
After the social drama movie "Rebel," G. V. Prakash Kumar returns with another romance, comedy, and drama film, starring alongside Aishwarya Rajesh.
If you watched the "Good Night" movie released last year, you can easily predict the story of "DeAr" because some scenes in both movies are similar.
In the first 20 minutes, not much happens. The first half has a slow pace, combining drama, family, comedy, and suspense. In contrast, the second half is a mixture of emotional and dramatic scenes.
Music is an essential part of every movie. Without music, a movie looks like a human body without skin. The music composed by GV Prakash himself is decent, while the dance steps of the lead cast are unique and different.
"DeAr" is filled with characters with distinct natures and mannerisms. For example, Saravanan, being the breadwinner of the family, embodies patriarchy. He orders his wife to massage his head while ignoring all her questions. On the other hand, Deepika, a newly married woman, snores loudly while sleeping, becoming a nightmare for Arjun.
As mentioned, the first half is filled with family drama, where director Anand Ravichandran focuses more on the supporting cast rather than the lead cast, such as Arjun’s elder brother Saravanan, his submissive wife Kalpana, and their mother Lakshmi. On the other hand, there is Rangarajan and his wife, who are Deepika’s parents.
Back to cast performance , G. V. Prakash Kumar, also known as G. V. Prakashan, is one of the cutest and youngest actors in the Tamil and Telugu film industry. After the success of "Rebel," he appears in this movie as the lead actor, playing the role of Arjun, a journalist living in Chennai with his joint family.
In the first half, the whole movie revolves around him and his dramatic family discussing his marriage to Deepika. His performance in the first half is excellent, with his comedic dialogues stealing the show. However, in the second half, his dialogues seem artificial.
Aishwarya, famous for her strong performances in "Kaaka Muttai" and "Ka Pae Ranasingam," is the lead actress in this movie, playing the role of Deepika. She becomes the center of attraction in the second half due to her strong and bold dialogues when someone comments on her snoring problem.
It’s fair to say that director Anand Ravichandran focuses more on G. V. Prakash Kumar in the first half and on Aishwarya in the second half.
Kaali Venkat, Nandhini, Rohini, Ilavarasu, Geetha Kailasam, and other supporting cast members did what was needed.
Minus points (-)
"DeAr" lost the first-mover advantage after sharing its premise with the 2023 film "Good Night." However, the film had much scope by reversing the gender, with the woman being the source of the issue.
The first half is more interesting compared to the second half. Due to the mixed storyline and lack of comedy, the movie becomes monotonous. Overly emotional scenes in the second half show that the audience is less interested.
The potential of a talented actress like Aishwarya Rajesh is limited in the film. If the director had given her more freedom to express her character Deepika, it would have been better for the movie. Additionally, the story is easily predictable for most audiences.
Technical Aspects
Director Anand Ravichandran is a newcomer in the Tamil film industry. He did his best in "Sethum Aayiram Pon," released in 2020. Under his direction, the story is interesting, but the execution is flawed. GV Prakash Kumar’s music and score are just average, failing to elevate the emotional moments. The editing by Rukesh could have been tighter, and the cinematography by Jagadeesh Sundarmurthy is decent.
