Plus points (+)
Ali Abbas Zafar, a popular director in the Hindi film industry, has worked on many well-known Bollywood movies like Sultan (2016), Tiger Zinda Hai (2017), and Bloody Daddy (2023). Now, he presents Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, an action-thriller movie.
After the success of War (2019), Tiger Shroff stars in Bade Miyan Chote Miyan alongside Akshay Kumar. The first half of the film mixes drama, a bit of comedy, and action, while the second half combines action, thriller, and suspense elements. Julius Packiam's background music plays a crucial role in engaging the audience.
The original Bade Miyan Chote Miyan was released in 1998, featuring Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda in the lead roles, directed by David Dhawan. Now, Ali Abbas Zafar revives the movie with a different cast, adding elements of comedy, romance, and action. Vishal Mishra's music enhances the film's appeal.
Akshay Kumar, playing the lead role of Freddy, an army officer, delivers a decent performance in the first half, combining action and comedy. In the second half, his patriotic dialogues and unique fighting skills capture the audience's attention. Known for social dramas and patriotic films like Airlift , Baby , Kesari , and Holiday , Akshay Kumar attempts something new with his acting, comedy, and dialogues in this movie.
Tiger Shroff, also a lead actor, plays Rocky, commonly known as Chote Miyan. His acting is appreciated in the first half. Although his previous films like Heropanti , War , and Baaghi 2 did not perform well at the box office, his performance in this movie is commendable, supported by a solid storyline. The climax, where he faces Kabir, is particularly noteworthy.
Prithviraj Sukumaran, playing the antagonist Kabir, has limited screen time in the first half, but the second half revolves around him. He gained popularity through the Tamil movie
Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire . Julius Packiam's mix of scary and horror background music enhances his villainous persona, and his strong, bold dialogues steal the show. Supporting cast members like Manushi Chhillar, Alaya F, Sonakshi Sinha, and Ronit Bose Roy also deliver necessary performances.
Minus Points (-)
Bade Miyan Chote Miyan doesn’t offer a single moment of peace for your ears. The background score is deafening, and the song sequences detract from the storyline. The narrative often seems directionless.
While Akshay Kumar's acting is decent, Tiger Shroff's overacting and unnecessary stunts irritate many viewers. Prithviraj Sukumaran, despite being a talented actor in the Tamil and Telugu film industries, fails to attract the South Indian audience with his performance in this movie.
Technical Aspects
While Ali Abbas Zafar is compared to S. S. Rajamouli in Bollywood, the movie's casting choices are questionable. Critics have noted that "Director Ali Abbas Zafar presents us with a fancy-wrapped gift box that’s empty inside. It’s an empty vessel that makes too much noise." Though Tiger Shroff's acting was good in Baaghi 2 and War , it doesn’t attract much audience in this film.
However, one commendable choice by Ali Abbas Zafar is casting Prithviraj Sukumaran in a negative role, drawing audiences to the cinema halls. The cinematography by Marcin Laskawiec is decent, and Steven H. Bernard's editing gives the second half a Hollywood-like appearance.
Conclusion
Overall, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan is a patriotic, action-thriller movie where two Indian soldiers fight a masked scientist. The first 30 minutes are somewhat uneventful, but the second half is a combination of action, thriller, and suspense.
