Plus Points (+)
Once again, Arun Matheswaran proves that if you cast a popular hero in a film with a solid story, the movie automatically becomes a super-duper hit and breaks all box office collection records. Actor Dhanush's personality in other movies is cute and innocent guy, but in this movie, you see a new side of Dhanush, much like Ranbir Kapoor in "Animal." The first half is a mixture of action and adventure, while the second half is filled with action, drama, and revenge. Sir Sivarajkumar and Sundeep also deliver brilliant cameos, creating wow moments throughout the film.
On the other hand, Priyanka Arul Mohan, the lead actress, delivers a good performance, and her dance steps are unique. Following the success of the movie "Jailer," Shiva Rajkumar appears in this film, playing an important role as Sengannan, the elder brother of Agneeswara (Dhanush). The audience appreciates his acting in some scenes. Additionally, Sundeep Kishan's performance as Captain Rafiq, along with his dialogues are good
Minus Points (-)
If you're a fan of Dhanush, you might have high expectations for your hero. However, Dhanush's entry style is not unique, and in the middle of the movie, it loses its core plot, with other unnecessary scenes highlighted by director Arun Matheswaran. Some fans of Dhanush can easily predict the movie's story, resulting in a lack of suspense. The first half of the movie runs slowly and dramatic, with little comedy and action. However, the second half is a mixture of action and thriller, with G V Prakash's background music playing an important role in creating suspense.
While several characters deliver good performances, the director mainly highlights Dhanush. Sivarajkumar, a supporting actor, only has three scenes in the movie, and there is nothing special in his performance. Some critics argue that the climax of the movie "Jailer" was better for Sivarajkumar than "Captain Miller." There are very few emotional and goosebumps-inducing scenes, which is the biggest minus point of the film. Additionally, the villain character should have had more scope. It's not wrong to say that Dhanush single-handedly carries the whole film on his shoulders from the first shot until the last.
Technical Aspects
Arun Matheswaran, a popular director and screenwriter in the Tamil film industry, has worked on many popular movies like "Rocky" (2021) and "Irudhi Suttru" (2016). He understands what the audience wants. Before "Captain Miller," he mainly focused on low-budget movies. However, now he collaborates with Dhanush in a movie with a budget of ₹50 crore. I appreciate the hard work of Director Arun Matheswaran and his team to making this type of movie, which reveals the dark history of India. However, due to a lack of creativity in the first half, the movie becomes tedious, but we see improvement in the second half. In a recent interview with Tamil Guardian, director Arun Matheswaran said that he first got the idea of making a film on this topic to his uncle, who was in the military, narrated to him about this incident. "I was young, and it motivated me a lot to make this film."
Cinematography by Siddhartha Nuni is top-notch, with guns and bomb blasts looking very real in the second half. The action sequences are well planned and executed, but some fight sequences could have been more engaging. G V Prakash's background scores and songs play a very important role, with the movie's BGM feeling rich and elevating the scenes. The editing, done by Nagooran Ramachandran, is superb.
Conclusion
"Captain Miller" is based on a true incident that took place in 1987 during the Sri Lankan civil war, alluding to the LTTE's first Black Tiger attack. If you are a fan of Dhanush, I think "Captain Miller" is best for you because in this movie, you see a new and unique avatar of Dhanush, where his way of speaking solid dialogues plays an important role. The first half is slow and dramatic, lacking emotional depth, but the second half is more interesting compared to the first one.
